Eplexity has built a Cloud Managment Platform (CMP) to manage the diverse cloud workloads in our MSP portfolio today.

The Eplexity CMP, which provides a single pane of glass through which an administrator can view all clouds where application deployments might land.

Such tools typically provide governance so that an administrator can dictate who is allowed to deploy what applications where. Metering and billing are important concepts as well so that administrators can put up guiderails for individuals or teams so that they don’t deploy too many resources at once without approvals.

Gone, though, are the days where it takes three weeks and multiple trouble tickets to get a virtual machine (VM). CMPs provide end users with self-service, on-demand resource provisioning while giving administrators a degree of control. An important aspect of CMP functionality is managing the lifecycle of an individual application, which typically starts with the modeling process.

7 Essentials for a Successful Cloud-First Transformation

The critical stages that will get your whole business safely into the cloud.

The seven essentials aren’t necessarily a linear process. How you structure your cloud journey is up to you – but you should certainly evaluate every one of these stages as you progress on your journey.

1- Executive Buy-In

For any business that’s currently running its own data centre(s), going Cloud-First is by definition a transformation project. And successful transformation projects are always driven by a senior executive.


The CEO may be concerned about staying ahead of competitors.

The CIO may be feeling pressure to deliver new services faster and more efficiently.

The CFO may be fretting about cash flow and looking for ways to save money.

The CMO may be itching to respond faster to market changes, experiment with new approaches or make smarter use of analytics.

And the CISO may be exercised by the need for more visibility, auditability and control.

So how do you get senior execs on board? And do you have to get support from all of them?

Experience dictates that you get them on board by appealing to their own priorities. Which business pain points are they most concerned about – and how can cloud solve them?

If you can get buy in from all of these people, great. But if you can demonstrate even to one of them that making the journey to cloud will deliver the benefits they’re seeking, you’ll have a powerful sponsor. They’ll be able to evangelise for you, and keep the whole business focused on why we’re moving to cloud and what we’ll be able
to do when we get there.

2- Aligning IT Staff

On the journey to cloud, you don’t just need exec buy-in. You need your whole IT team on board – committed to achieving the vision, and prepared to work in completely new ways.

All evidence suggests that most techies love it. And what’s not to love – cloud is a chance to learn new skills, play around with new ideas, test stuff out to see how it works, and actually make
a difference to the organisation.

Most people will snap your hand off to get at some of that. But you may find that some of your people resist change. And any resistance will at best hinder your progress, and at worst derail the whole venture.

So here’s what you do:

Be very firm and clear about the certainty of the cloud journey: it’s non-negotiable, there’s senior exec sponsorship, and the results will be transformative for the business. You need everyone on board with you, engaged and excited for what the future will bring.

Of course there are bound to be worries – your data centre team will soon find themselves operating in a hybrid world, with progressively less on-premises infrastructure to manage, and an abundance of new and innovative cloud technologies to master. So it’s essential that you articulate exactly how their role will change, over what timescale, and what opportunities they will have in the Cloud-First world.

When everyone’s on board, you need to think seriously about skills. Great cloud skills are scarce, and in huge demand. So the best approach is to upskill your whole team as fast as you can – maybe using an external provider or partner for some rapid knowledge transfer.

Bear in mind that it’s not just hard skills like learning the best way to move applications to the cloud (lift and shift, or re-architect?), or how to use emerging cloud-based services. A cloud environment is one of continuous delivery, integration and testing – which means your developers will need to work in concert with your operations people in a DevOps culture. So for best results, build both tech skills and workstyle skills into your training plan.

3- Get Some Quick Wins

If you’re committed to Cloud-First, it means that, at some point down the road, you’re going to be moving some or all of your gnarlier systems to the cloud.

Before you start asking people to work on the tough stuff, you need to prove that the journey is worth it: that there are fantastic, tangible benefits from going to the cloud. And to keep everyone engaged, it’s best to do this as quickly as possible.

The most effective way to do that is to get some quick wins. Identify one or more applications or workloads that can move quickly and easily to the cloud, and which will deliver very visible benefits to the organisation.

But which ones? Your existing apps are likely to have integrations with other systems that will complicate and slow down the move to cloud. So it’s best to start with a net-new application, one that will deliver immediate and tangible benefits.

Look for apps that the business needs to meet its goals, but which have previously been deemed impractical to implement on-premises – perhaps because they’re resource-hungry, or will only be needed occasionally, or would have meant a high-end hardware investment.

The need could come from anywhere in the organisation, but for best results, look for something that’s personally important to your executive sponsor. What kind of app would accelerate innovation in the business, for example? What analytical functionality does Marketing need in order to go real-time?

 Look for apps that the business needs to meet its goals, but which have previously been deemed impractical to implement on-premises.

By identifying something really valuable to the business, setting it up really quickly in the cloud and starting to deliver immediate benefits, you’ll show the organisation the real, tangible value of Cloud-First operation. Plus, your team will have gained valuable experience and skills in setting up and managing high-profile business apps in a cloud environment.

4. Engage Eplexity & Partners

Even as you’re learning and building experience, you can get some quick and valuable wins under your belt (see Essential #3). But as you start to turn your attention to your business-critical and/or legacy apps, the challenge starts to ramp up.

This is where you should consider enlisting the help of people who build, manage, transition or integrate critical IT systems in the cloud every day.

Your cloud infrastructure or platform provider should be able to offer guidance and training. If that’s AWS, we have a wealth of scheduled and bespoke training courses that can help, and Eplexity can provide consultancy and onsite assistance with your cloud transition. We also offer a free Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF), based on real-world best practice, to help you plan your cloud journey. If you’re running packaged applications from independent software vendors (ISVs), those vendors should be able to help, too. Try mapping the vendors whose applications you use against the accredited partners list maintained by your cloud provider. Again, if you go with Eplexity, we can help you identify ISVs who’ve ported their applications to our cloud platforms.

A word of caution: if you bring ISV partners and Eplexity in to help with your cloud journey, it’s essential to have your team work alongside them, and fully absorb the skills, knowledge and practices that come with a Cloud-First transition. Click here for more details on our AWS Accelerator program.

5. Establish a Centre of Cloud Excellence

We’ve already stressed a couple of times that once you’re operating in a Cloud-First world, a DevOps style of operation becomes the norm.

In a DevOps scenario, your development and operations teams work closely together to build, test and deliver continuous iterations of your technology assets.

In this world, it’s not uncommon to make and implement 4-5 updates to a given app in a given day. It’s a far cry from the days when dev teams would work on an app until it was ‘finished’, then pass it over the wall to the operations team to implement and manage.

n the world of DevOps, you’ll need to implement and instill a whole new set of working processes and a whole new working culture. And that’s why it’s critical to establish a Centre of Cloud Excellence as early as possible in your Cloud-First journey.

Your Centre of Cloud Excellence is a formal DevOps team whose job it is to establish and promote best practice throughout the IT function. It will probably include people from both development and operations, and you may want to include some IT security folk as well.

It may or may not be the team who worked on your first enterprise cloud projects. And you may or may not call it a Centre of Cloud Excellence.

But one thing’s for sure: this is where your journey to Cloud-First really accelerates – and this team
is what keeps it on track.

So what should the team do? Its aim is to establish a culture of DevOps working, so it will do everything it can to define, communicate and oversee that culture.

You’ll probably want it to be responsible at least for the following:

An important thing to note: the Centre of Cloud Excellence is essential, but it shouldn’t be a permanent fixture. The team should aim to put itself out of a job as soon as possible – by making DevOps second nature throughout the IT function. Once this is complete, the team can return to their day job and Cloud-First becomes business as usual.

6. A Hybrid Adoption Framework

While many organisations have ambitions to move 100% to the cloud, the realities of enterprise IT mean it’s likely to be a long journey.

Inevitably, there will be a period – which could last for some years – where you’re operating a hybrid model: with some apps and workloads in the cloud, and others staying on-premises. The job of the CIO will be to continuously prioritise and re-evaluate what to move and what to keep, especially as the pace of innovation in the cloud opens up new opportunities virtually every day.

During this time, you’ll need to continue to communicate the Cloud-First plan, especially as that plan evolves. You’ll need to keep your data centre team updated on when and how their roles will change, and make sure they get appropriate experience and training to make the most of what cloud has to offer.

Because this dual-mode stage is not going to last forever. If you’re committed to Cloud-First, you’ll need a well thought-out strategy that sees you increasingly moving legacy apps into the cloud – including the big, monolithic, complex legacy applications that are critical to your business.

A small proportion of these legacy apps will never go into the cloud. These are the ones for which there’s a good answer to the basic Cloud-First question: “Why NOT cloud”? It may be that the data is too sensitive, they can’t be re-architected, or there is no viable financial or business advantage from moving them.

But for any application where there is a compelling argument for cloud, you’ll need to set to work – pulling them apart and refactoring them into decoupled components that are better able to benefit from cloud architecture.

This is a huge task and by far the biggest step towards Cloud-First. Getting it right will require close co-operation between cross-functional teams, expertise and skills gained from engagement with partners (see Essential #4), and the guidance of your Centre of Cloud Excellence (see Essential #5).

Getting everyone on board and having a well thought out, well documented and well communicated hybrid strategy will make this transition period much easier to manage and much faster to complete.

7. Reaching a “Cloud-First Standard“

Cloud-First is all about shifting the enterprise IT mindset from “Why cloud?” to “Why not cloud?” In this new world, you need a really convincing argument for keeping something on-premises.

And as cloud skills proliferate, DevOps becomes more embedded and cloud providers roll out more and more useful services, there are fewer and fewer arguments for keeping apps, data and workloads on premises. The alternative is just too compelling:

  • Much, much lower IT costs
  • The agility to move faster than competitors
  • An on-demand environment forexperimentation and innovation
  • Near-infinite resources to supportgame-changing initiatives

This is where every organisation wants to be – and when Cloud-First becomes your standard, you’re there. You can move fast, deploy new services globally, improve your security posture, free up real estate, innovate on the fly, and respond to changes in an instant.

Traditional solutions prove inadequate in addressing these global network dynamics. Key Finding of the latest WAN report
  1. The volume of enterprise traffic has grown across all regions and verticals.
Data is exploding worldwide, driven by Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and video; the proliferation of network-attached and wireless devices; virtu- alization; and the adoption of both public and private cloud delivery models. From our data, we find that the largest growth regionally is in Asia-Pacific (APAC) and across verticals is in the Software and Internet vertical followed by the Manufacturing industry.
  1. Nearly 50% of enterprise traffic is a combination of HTTP and HTTPS.
Applications are continuing to transition away from monolithic, on-premises applications to web-based consumption and delivery models. We see a size- able drop in the usage of certain on-premises applications, indicating that enterprises are replacing these with cloud versions of those applications or entirely new applications that perform similar functions. The shift to the cloud is now non-negotiable.
  1. Bandwidth at non-headquarters enterprise sites is reasonably good worldwide.
Globally, only about 12% our customers have links with bandwidth less than 10 Mbps, which is over a 50% decrease from 34% last year. Twenty-five per- cent of our customers have one or more 100 Mbps links. Even in developing countries, access-site bandwidth is never below 2 Mbps.
  1. While certain components of the enterprise WAN are improving, oth- ers are actually hindering the enterprise’s ability to conduct business over the Internet, especially when application traffic must travel over long distances.
TCP application response times can be as high as 40 seconds and have a varia- tion of nearly 200% depending on the distance between the sites. As distance increases, the problem is further accentuated. Our tests revealed that the link with the highest variability in response time was the link between Singapore and Dubai.
  1. For some regions, inconsistency in the application response time cannot be solely attributed to the distance between locations, but is also dependent on the network infrastructure itself.
With some geographies, such as the Middle East and some parts of Asia, the connectivity in place is more detrimental than distance alone. In some instanc- es, the variation in response time can be as high as 153%, with an average application response time around one second.

Eplexity Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) provides continuous replication of critical applications, infrastructure, data and systems to the cloud to enable rapid recovery after an IT outage. DRaaS delivers an Eplexity fully managed service helping businesses to reduce costs and at the same time gaining Eplexity’s credible history of resiliency expertise. DRaaS provides end-to-end integrated services using private, public and/or hybrid cloud.

Eplexity has focused on the following key points in developing a solution for the Client:

Eplexity Design Focus

It’s important that a well-proven offering is presented to the Client to simplify the overall business operations. The key to success is to use standard solution building blocks wrapped in a managed service model ensuring operational consistency and predictable results. Eplexity delivers this service under an OPEX usage based model priced on per GB and number of compute resources protected basis allowing the flexibility to scale or flex the solution up or down as the client’s needs evolve.


Network Components The Eplexity DRaaS is designed with six standard components; Replication Agents, Private Replication Network, Private Management Network, Shared or Dedicated Hardware, Dedicated Storage, and Security Safeguards each of which is described in detail below. Each component contributes to the overall security of the DR solution.

Replication Agents Eplexity DRaaS provides a host based logical replication solution whereby client-side agents are installed on the specific client server(s) to be protected and Eplexity works with the Client to determine the best way to address the operating systems, data, applications, and hardware in the Client environment. We do not choose a “one size fits all” philosophy understanding each Client will have unique circumstances which will often dictate that best way to go often utilizing the underlying capabilities of technologies already present in the Client’s environment.
Replication network The Eplexity DRaaS infrastructure will interface with the Client’s hosts across a network. Depending on client requirements, a number of options exist to communicate with the Eplexity DRaaS infrastructure for replication of data and user access networks such as MPLS, Point-2-Point, Over-Internet, Secure VPN and IPSEC. By default the replication network will provide one way replication in steady-state, but can be reversed or bidirectional replication following an event for failback operations..

Private Management Network All management of the environment is conducted over a dedicated management network accessible only by Eplexity NOC Centre and personnel. All access and use of this network is controlled and monitored by a dedicated security group.The network also allows monitoring and auditing of support personnel usage.This network is protected through a secure firewall that provides an IPsec virtual private network (VPN). The VPN permits only specific hosts and users to gain access and then only after entering the proper validation sequence. Logs of each access are retained for audit by the Eplexity Service delivery group.Eplexity support staff access is permitted using centralized authentication. Each user must have an account on the server along with valid credentials for authenticating against the centralized authentication server. This enables the delivery security group to enforce password policies in a centralized manner, allows for the expedient revocation of credentials when necessary, and also allows the security group to limit which Prime environments a given individual within the support organization can access providing the ability to use factors such as geographic region or other characteristics as access limiting factors.

Shared or Dedicated Hardware The Eplexity DRaaS infrastructure can deliver a number of deployment options or delivery models depending on client requirements such as a multi-tenant (shared) PoD (Point-of-Delivery) or a Dedicated PoD with location service options such as Eplexity private or public clouds in over 3+ data centers in the US. Depending on the deployment model, Eplexity DRaaS infrastructure consist of common switches, firewalls, routers, and target storage for data replication, management, replication and recovery servers providing a secure and isolated environment for each client whether shared or dedicated amongst DRaaS subscribers as a cloud architecture. The number of physical and/or virtual servers to be protected will be based on client requirements and capacity goals established during the initial phases of the proposal activity and confirmed prior to the start of service.

Dedicated Storage Data replicated to the Eplexity DRaaS Infrastructure will be written to and maintained on dedicated storage. Storage is always dedicated as it contains client’s data, therefore it is secured with Eplexity DRaaS. Storage to be used will be based on client performance requirements and capacity goals established during the initial phases of the proposal activity and confirmed prior to the start of service.

Server and Infrastructure Security The replication service will be secured and monitored by the Eplexity’s Network Operation Center. Eplexity DRaaS is based on Eplexity’s internal security standards along with industry best practices.User access on management network granted based on centrally managed authorization credentials.Eplexity’s strict security policy is in place on each server used to provide management oversight of the environment. The Eplexity security scan as specified by Eplexity is run once a month to validate compliance and the results are inspected by the security group. All unneeded services are disabled on the management server(s) such that only those required to run reporting and monitoring will be active.By default replication will be one way with the Client data center initiating replication and the Eplexity Resiliency Services target data center receiving data. At the conclusion of a disaster event, replication back to the source site may be requested by the customer to be performed on a custom basis.Centralized endpoint monitoring software is used on each backup appliance and DRaaS infrastructure to validate the security status of the environment. This software also enables expedient remediation of any security issues found within the environment and facilitates the application of critical patches.

Remote Troubleshooting All remote troubleshooting and remediation is included in your monthly fees, as per the limitation of the service package chosen. Any service that requires an on-site engineer is charged at Eplexity applicable hourly service rates service rates.

Support for Infrastructure Requirements Upon request, Eplexity will provide infrastructure consultation services to determine if the customer has the required circuit, hardware, and software at each location to establish the proper connectivity. There may be a charge for these consultative services, which will be determined and established in advance.

Backup as a Service – Managed ApplianceGeneral Description: This service provides the Customer with an enterprise Managed Backup Service for their virtual and/or physical environment. The backup appliance is hosted within the Client’s data center. Backup agents backup Virtual Machine files (virtual disks, physical machine disks, applications) and store within the Eplexity provided backup storage appliance. Contact your Eplexity Managed Services Account Manager about Cloud Storage should no on-premise storage be available for backup. For 30-day trials a virtual appliance will be used.

A true hybrid cloud experience means the freedom to provision new workloads or move legacy workloads from your on-premises infrastructure to the cloud and back again. 2. Choose the appropriate service to meet your needs

Many enterprises have already seen the benefits of speed, agility and flexibility of cloud computing models and Amazon AWS through initial migration pilots or use cases. As they seek to extend usage of AWS more broadly across their organizations, CIOs and IT decision-makers face a series of new, important questions:

How can we use AWS to build a foundation for an IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) operating model?

Answering these questions is critical for enterprises seeking to leverage the benefits of AWS across their organizations, and provide users the services and capabilities they need to drive innovation and growth through Migration planning.

Description & Objective:
The design phase is the key starting point for all of the project components.  During this phase, the Eplexity team will gather information about Client’s AWS requirements to gain an in-depth understanding of operations, networking and data management.

So what does a Project Based Work Plan look like?

Approach: Eplexity will provide a Senior Engineer and Project Manager to perform the following professional services for Client.

Subtask 1 – Eplexity will assign a Project Manager to coordinate the tasks and schedules associated with this project.

Subtask 2 – Eplexity will conduct an initial kick-off meeting with Client to review the plan of work, identify project participants and their roles, and establish initial project timelines.

Subtask 3 -Eplexity will provide requirements for accessing the Client AWS environment as needed to capture information needed to develop the design plan.

Subtask 4 -Verify the virtual infrastructure and components

Subtask 5 -Eplexity will perform a design workshops with the Client to assess networking, security and virtual hardware requirements.  Including, but not limited to:

• Hybrid-cloud design patterns including tools, and methodologies.

• Selecting the appropriate AWS service based on data, compute, database, or security requirements

• Identifying appropriate use of AWS architectural best practices

• Estimating AWS costs and identifying cost control mechanisms

• Review and develop use cases relevant to the business with a deep-dive into one use-case.

• Review essential services and service-delivery models using macro and micro-services architectures.

• VPC to VPC peering vs Transient VPC architectures.

• Build foundational skills with your enterprise architecture, infrastructure, security, and DevOps teams orient you to key AWS concepts and services.

• Design IAM and key management based on existing directory structures, and/or IT security requirements.

• AWS external connectivity design for scale and according to industry best practices.

• Determine migration strategy for data to AWS.


Design Documentation and implementation documentation related to the AWS deployment; including:Eplexity will produce a Pre-Deployment Engineering Report (PDER) detailing the results of the AWS design. Modification project timing or cost estimates, resulting from the design, as applicable.

Approach: This is a set of design and build tasks based on the design workshops performed in the previous tasks.  It will include but not be limited to building AWS instances, defining AWS security groups, writing auto scale templates, and related network infrastructure components to operationalize an AWS environment.

Subtask 1 -Establish network connectivity from up to one (1) location into an AWS Region. This can be completed by VPN, Internet via Jump host, or a customer acquired Direct Connect solution.

Subtask 2 -Prepare AWS Account Configuration and integration into existing Active Directory environment should one exist.

Subtask 3 -Migrate up to one (1) server application into AWS. Alternatively Eplexity may build a 3-tier web architecture on-top of AWS Infrastructure should a migration of an application not be feasible.

Subtask 4 -Establish backup of server application in AWS environment. This will involve determining frequency of backups, retention requirements, and policy to rotate backup sets to lower tier volumes for cost savings.

Subtask 5 -Configure auto scaling script based on CPU, or application availability health checks. Perform testing to ensure application is made available in multiple Availability Zones.

Subtask 6 -Perform on-site training of the implemented solution above. This includes one 4 hour session performed by the Eplexity Consulting Engineer.


As-built documentation of the  implementation solution will be provided as well as test runs confirming operational functionality.
